Let’s Be Having You -“Ep 1: Well, let’s be having you then!”

Howzat? 4.8 / 6

For those of you who loved listening to ‘Quickly Kevin, Will He Score?’ there is hope here that this new show, which graduates from following soccer fandom in the 1990s to the 2000s, will live up to expectations and fill a [comedy / sport] hole now that comedian Josh Widdicombe has given up the mantle to concentrate on projects that make money [read: Parenting Hell].

The only remaining survivor from Quickly Kevin is (professional podcaster?) Chris Scull who is joined by the famously disabled comedian and presenter Alex Brooker, alongside their producer Nick Lustig who, even though I had never heard his name before, already sounds a grade up from Quickly Kevin’s old producer (sorry Michael).

And for those on tenterhooks, you can breathe a sigh of relief because on first listen, the pilot episode of Let’s Be Having You ticks all the boxes Quickly Kevin fans would want ticked.

They kick off (pun intended) by discussing the eponym of the podcast – namely, the infamous halftime speech by celebrity chef and all round ‘crazy Norwich owner’ Delia Smith, who, with microphone in hand, drunkenly berated the bemused crowd with the immortal words, ‘let’s be having you!’

Chris, Alex, and Nick go straight for the jugular and waste no time in wondering what her drinks of choices were to result in such a sententious statement: “Red Wine, probably”, suggests Brooker, “but not before a lengthy session at All Bar One.”

Pretty funny stuff.

Other topics to whet the appetite for what’s to come include: the bleakness of Steve McLaren holding a huge England branded umbrella that led to his downfall (‘the wally with the brolly’), the huge potential of 00s documentaries to be ironically analysed, and revisiting plot lines from the TV series ‘Dream Team’.

Time will tell if this can be a sufficient replacement for Quickly Kevin but the first signs are positive.
