Friday Slips

What glory days these be. We have the T20 Cricket World Cup on-the-go and now, the European Championships start today too. To “celebrate”, let’s see what effort podcasters are putting out there…

Football Weekly – “Euro 2024 preview: Groups E and F … including Portugal”

Howzat? 4.9 / 6

The Guardian knows when it’s onto a good thing and this stalwart of their stable just keeps on delivering the goods. The Euro Champs preview is exactly what it is – mundane – but it’s the pairing of Max Rushden and Barry Glendenning that consistently delivers football + humour. If you want a companion to this summer’s championship, make it this one.

Test Match Special – “Men’s T20 World Cup: Rampant Rashid crushes Oman”

Howzat? 3.6 / 6

Ladies and gentlemen, Test Match Special is the sacred ground of sports broadcasting. Who would dare criticise TMS? Well, us… a little bit. Long gone are the pronounced English of Blowers and CMJ, which isn’t a bad thing, but it doesn’t have the same gravitas as it once did. Ultimately, if you’re after a solid summation of the latest game where England trounced the mighty Oman at the T20 championship, it’s the badger.

The Upshot – “PSG poison and Scotland star accidently decks his own mother”

Howzat? 1.0 / 6

The Upshot newsletter sums up all the irreverent and tragic / hilarious stories around the fringes of sport, like ‘Robert Snodgrass shagging a donut’ or Phil Foden visiting a Tarot Card reader. So we had high hopes for the accompanying podcast. Unfortunately, it’s two posh blokes chuntering about their latest japes, which no one really wants to hear, do they?

Superscoreboard – “Scotland’s Euro Stories | Pat Nevin”

Howzat? 4.9 / 6

Ignore Scotland at this summer’s Euros at your peril. Alba’s Alphas are being celebrated by this series from Bauer Media. And if you can ignore the gambling adverts, annoying commercial radio audio stings, and the unnecessary bed music, this is a brilliant listen. Pat Nevin is one of the more eloquent ex-footballers and he spins a ‘braw’ yarn.

The Running Channel Podcast – “TRC Meets – From Being Paralysed To Running A World Record At London Marathon!”

Howzat? 3.5 / 6

“Incredible running stories you’ll never have heard”. Sounds good… and it is. This episode tells a tragic story-come-inspiration of Ant Bryan recovering from becoming paralysed to becoming a running legend. Only the x 2 host voices and below average mic technique let it down. But overall, it’s a pleasant surprise.
